SUMMARY: Alexx lost her husband, now she must raise her children and manage a career by herself. Will she ever love someone again the way she did Peter? Will love find her from a place close to her heart? Read and find out!!!!

Loving Again

The day had been long for Dr. Alexx Woods. When she had arrived that morning she immediately had her fist call out, a DB on Miami Beach. In the past year, she had been trying to do her best at managing her job and raising her two children by herself. Ever since her husband died, things had gotten much harder for the ME.

Alexx was just spraying down her table when she heard a familiar voice over the autopsy intercom, LT. Horatio Caine.

“Working late again Doctor?” came the soothing voice.

“Just finishing up honey. What do I owe this pleasure?” she asked.

“Just leaving myself and thought I would make sure you were alright.”

“Yeah……I’m okay.” She said as she looked up to the autopsy viewing area, but saw know one there now.

“You sure your okay?” the voice behind her now.

Alexx turned around to face Horatio. To him she looked tired and in much need of rest. Though he would never tell her that to her face, knowing the repercussions this could cause. Alexx Woods would never let him live down a comment like that.

“Alexx, when was the last time you went out? And not with the children.” he asked as he fingered his sunglass’s.

“Not since before Peter…….let’s just say it’s been a while. Why?”

“Well, I was wondering, it’s still early…..”

“Just get to it Horatio.”

“Well, um, would you like to grab a bite to eat with me before heading home?” he asked looking up at her now.

“Dinner? Well…..I really need to get home to the kids Horatio.”

“Isn’t Samantha there full time now?”

“Yeah, but..”

“No buts’. You need some adult time away from here and home.”

“And this coming from someone who practically lives here at the lab.” She said with a smile.

“Yeah, well, I guess I need to get out more also. So what do you say?”

Alexx thought about what he had said. She hadn’t been out with another adult since Peter had died. She had basically spent all her time either at work or with her children and it was taking a toll on her. As a doctor, deep down she knew she needed this and that Horatio would not push her to talk.

“Alright. Just let me finish up here and call Sam to let her know I’ll be a little late tonight.”

“Okay. Page me when your ready and I’ll meet you in the parking garage.”

“Alright.”

With that Horatio left and Alexx returned to her task.

About an hour later they were sitting in a booth at the Wedgewood Grill. They ordered there dinner and drinks and waited for them. Alexx looked around at the couple’s, noticing how happy most of them looked. She wondered if she would ever feel that happiness again.

“Alexx, you okay?”

“Yeah, just thinking. I do want to thank you though.”

“For what?” Horatio asked, tilting his head to the side a bit.

“Getting me out. Deep down I’ve know I needed this. I was just….I don’t know….”

“Felt as if you were going to forget him? As if you didn’t deserve to go out without him?”

“Yeah.”

“I felt the same for a while after Marisol died. We umm…..we had dinner reservations for that night.” Horatio said with a sad look in his eyes but continued, “She ummm, she told me that she was not planning on standing me up. Deep down, I knew though.”

“How did you deal with it Horatio? I know sometimes I just want to scream, or run away. But I can’t. The children need me as much as I need them, but it is just so hard.” Alexx said as tears were forming in her eyes.

“Sweetheart, that is something that we all go through when we loose a loved one. I got through it by immersing myself into my work. I don’t have any family to look after anymore, so I just buried myself in work. But you, you have a family that needs you as much as you need them. And, you have the team that loves you. Were always here for you Alexx, no matter what.”

“I know Horatio, I know.” She said as a small smile came to her face.

Dinner was brought to them and they sat and ate, chatting about the children, where they grew up, just about anything but work. Neither wanted to think of the lab. Alexx had found out that Horatio had worked the patrol beat in the neighborhood where she had grown up when he was in New York. And he found out that she was working at the hospital that he was taken to when he was stabbed during a case he was working. There world’s had seemed to be close to one another, but not close enough for them to meet early on.

After they had finished there dinner and coffee, Horatio paid the bill and they walked out to there vehicles.

“Well, Doctor, you drive home carefully.”

“I will and thank you again, not only for dinner….”

“Alexx, it was my pleasure. Well, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Yeah. Horatio?”

“Yes?”

Alexx didn’t want the night to end yet, but she knew she had to get home. She shook her head, “Nothing. Good night.”

“Good Night Alexx.” He watched as she got in her car and then he went to his hummer.

Alexx awoke earlier then usual the following morning. A dream she had had her confused, and a bit worried. She could remember every detail of it, the smells, the conversation, the kiss. ‘Oh my god, Alexx what are you doing dreaming of Horatio Caine for?’ she asked herself. ‘He didn’t kiss you’ she said to herself. She walked to her bathroom and turned on the shower, then turned around looking at herself in the mirror. She saw that she had lost weight, she had dark circles around her eyes, basically, she had let herself go since Peter had died. ‘No more Honey. You look awful. Time for a change.’

After she finished her shower, Alexx put on her makeup, something she really hadn’t worn in a long time, then fixed her long black hair. When she was done she went to the closet. Normally she would wear a tank top with a pair of slacks in the summer heat, but, not today. Today was the first day of a new start for Alexx Woods. She chose a dark pin stripped pant’s suit with a white sheel under the jacket. Alexx then pulled out the black high heeled shoes that she had bought when she purchased the outfit. Looking in the full length mirror at herself, she looked more like she belonged in an office instead of a morgue. ‘Perfect’ she said out loud and smiled.

Alexx arrived at the morgue almost an hour early, she had wanted to get caught up with some paperwork from the day before. She walked into her office to get started and was surprised to see a bouquet of flowers in a beautiful vase. There was a card stuck in them, so she opened it and read “Thanks for the great conversation and company. H “. She smiled and looked at the flowers, there fragrance filling her office. She placed them on the left side of her desk and placed the card in her pocket, then sat to begin the dreaded paperwork.

Triple the Pleasure

The day had started out like many others in Miami. Lt. Horatio Caine stood outside the crime scene scanning the area and the occupants. He new his team would be inside processing the scene for any evidence. The building, a garage with an apartment above it, was the scene of the crime. The only other building on the property was a lovely single dwelling home, probably built in the late 90's.

Horatio spotted Detective Frank Tripp talking with a woman that caught Horatio's eye, in more way than one. She had medium length brown hair that was being held back by her sunglasses. She seemed to be around Calleigh's height, when Calleigh was not wearing heals, but unlike Calleigh, she was "husky" Horatio thought. He smiled to himself, slipped on his sunglass's and strode over to Tripp.

"Frank, what do we have?" Horatio asked, taking a better look at the woman standing with the detective.

"Well Horatio, looks like a homicide. This is Ms. Kathleen Timms, she owns the place. The vic was her tenant. Ms. Timms, Lt. Horatio Caine with the Miami Crime Lab."

"Ma'am," Horatio said taking off his sunglass's.

"Please, no "ma'am". Makes me feel old." the lady said.

"Ok," Horatio said with a shy smile, "what can you tell me about what happened here?"

"Well, nothing really. I had placed an eviction notice on Tom's door last week. He was over three week's late on his rent and I hadn't heard or seen him. Then today, I decided to just peak in and see if he had left without saying anything, that's when I found him. I immediately called the police."

“Tom?”

“Yeah, Tom Livingston.” She told him.

"Did he have a girlfriend or any enemies that you know of?" Horatio asked.

"No, not that I know of really. I did see a young woman coming a going a few weeks ago, but that's about it. He hardly ever said anything to me."

"How long was he your tenant?" Tripp asked.

"Oh, about 3 months. I would have to check my records just to make sure though."

Horatio eyed the woman that stood before him. "Why would you have to check your records?"

"Well, a few years ago, I was involved in an explosion. I hit my head and ever since I have had trouble remembering things. So just to be on the safe side I write things down and keep records. I'm OCD when it comes to that."

"Ok, Frank, is my team up there?"

"Yeah, so is Alexx."

"Alright, Ms. Timms thank you, we'll be in touch." Horatio said as he placed his sunglass's back on and started towards the apartment.

"Alright, we'll I can't think of anything else. Can we contact you at this number you gave me?" Tripp asked.

"Yeah. Can I ask a question detective?"

"Sure."

"Is that the same Horatio Caine that was on the Miami Dade Bomb Squad a few years ago?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Just wondering. I'll be inside if you need anything." With that she moved quickly back to her house, leaving Tripp wondering what that was all about. He looked back at the apartment and decided to fill Horatio in on this little tidbit.

Inside the apartment the team was busy processing the scene as Horatio entered. He stood there taking in his surroundings. Alexx was with the body, Eric was dusting for prints, Calleigh, looking for any spent casing and Speed was busy photographing the rooms. The apartment, he noticed, was small. The kitchen and living room connected with a two rooms off the living room. The furniture looked to be in place, no signs of strugle.

"What do we have here Alexx?" Horatio asked in ME.

"One shot, close range from the looks of it. Thru and thru. No other marks that I can tell, but I'll know more at post."

"Do we have a time of death?"

"No, but from the looks of it I would say two, maybe three days, I'll know more when I get him back to my lab."

"Ok, thank you." he told her as he walked over to Eric.

"Anything yet Eric?"

"Nothing H, look's like the place was cleaned. Even the light switches."

"O...kay. Well, keep checking, there bound to have missed something."

"Right H."

"Horatio, there is no casing and I cannot find the bullet. However, I did find a hole over there in the wall and it looks like it was made by a bullet." Calleigh told him.

"But....."

"But, it looks as though the killer knew to clean up after himself. It's gone"

"Alright. So we have a scene that has been cleaned, so were probably dealing with a professional. Alright, keep checking, I'll be talking with the landlord again."

With that he turned to leave, but was met buy Tripp.

"Horatio, I think you might want to question Ms. Timms again."

"Why's that Frank?"

"We'll, maybe it's nothing, but after you left to come up here, she asked about you, if you were the same Horatio Caine that was on the bomb squad a few years ago. Then she made a hasty retreat back into her house. Something just ain't sitting right about that with me."

"Ok Frank, let's go talk to Ms. Timms again."

Kathleen Timms was a vibrant 33 year old woman. Years before she had been working when a bomb went off, injuring her and causing her to go into early retirement. Though there was no visible scars, the scars she did carry were on the inside. She had once admired a man that she had never met, only seen in passing in the halls while at work. She had hoped to take that first step and introduce herself to him, but then the accident happened, and all hopes vanished like a dream.

Kathleen was sitting in her living room watching out the window when she saw the two men approaching. Her heart started beating faster, her breathing increasing, till she had to look away. No, she couldn't do this again. The doorbell rang and she sat there, wondering what to do. Again the doorbell rang and she slowly stood up, then walked to the door, taking a long deep breathe before opening it.

"Lieutenant, Detective, is there something I can help you with?"

Tripp spoke up first, "Yes, we were wondering if we could ask you a few more questions?"

"Sure, please come in." Kathleen opened the door more, letting them inside. "Please, have a seat."

"Thank you." Horatio said. "Now Ms. Timms, I was wondering if you might have heard anything out of the ordinary two-maybe three days ago, or maybe saw something?"

"No, not that I can remember, but I was gone alot."

"Where were you than?" Horatio asked.

"Well, between shopping and paying the bills, and also the beach. I try to go every day. Oh and the gym."

A knock came at the door and Kathleen excused herslf to answer it.

"Excuse me ma'am, is Detective Tripp here?" a rather young looking officer asked?

"Yes, Detective."

Frank went to the door and Kathleen returned to her seat, across from Horatio.

"H, I gotta 'nother call. I'll be in touch. Oh and Speed's here."

"Thank you Frank. Speed?"

"Were all finished up there. Alexx is on her way back to the lab. Need anything else before I go."

"Yes, hang around for a bit will ya."

"Sure thing H. I'll be at the hummer."

With that Speed left, leaving Horatio and Kathleen alone.

"So, Ms. Timms, I take it you have people that will confirm that you were at the place’s you mentioned then."

"Yeah, well except the beach, I go alone usually, to think."

"Okay. I need you to come down to the station and give a statement, just a formality."

"Sure, that's not a problem."

“Ms. Timms, do I know you from somewhere?” Horatio asked looking down at the sunglass in his hands.

“Well…..yes and no.”

“Okay, care to explain then?” Horatio looked at the woman.

Kathleen raised her eyebrows and took a deep breathe. “Well, I usta be on the bomb squad. I came on right as you left to be a CSI. Al always said you were one of the best he had ever seen. We were called out to a bomb threat in Little Havana. Al thought that it looked pretty simple a job, so he let me go in. To make a long story short, there was a second device that would activate 25 seconds after the first was disengaged. I never saw it. When it went, I was coming out of the building. I got thrown into a car and ended up in the hospital with a severe concussion and 3 broke ribs, but I couldn’t remember things. Nothing big at first, just little things. Anyway, I retired and have been occupying my time ever since.”

“Bomb Squad. I seem to remember that case. Al was pretty upset at what had happened. Said it should have been him.” Horatio said, thinking about his fallen friend.

“Yeah, he visited me while I was in the hospital recuperating. He told me the same thing. I just didn’t feel I could do my job properly anymore, not with the memory loss, so I left and never looked back.”

“Well, when you can, come down and give your statement.” Horatio told her.

“I will, and thank you.”

“For what “ma’am”, I mean Ms. Timms.”

“Kathleen, please. Basically…..understanding.”

With that Horatio left. Kathleen watched as he walked out to his Hummer and talked with the man standing there waiting.

“Damn, he still looks as good going as he does coming.” Kathleen said outloud to herself and closed the door.

Later that afternoon, Kathleen made her way down to CSI Headquarters. I had been a long time since she had been there, but it still felt good being there. She made her way into the lobby stopping at the reception desk, letting them know she was there to give her statement. She looked around, nothing had changed much, just lots of unfamiliar faces. The receptionist was on the phone when Horatio entered the building, noticing Kathleen waiting there.

“Ms. Timms?”

Kathleen turned around, hearing his voice. “Lt. Caine. Good to see you again. Just thought I would come on down and give my statement.”

“Okay, well…..Umm Paula, can I get a visitor pass for Ms. Timms please and let Detective Tripp know we’ll be in interrogation room 2 please.”

“Yes Lieutenant.” the receptionist responded, handing a visitor pass to Kathleen, then got back on the phone.

“This way please.” He told her, leading her to interrogation. He opened the door to the room, letting her enter first and then took his place on the opposite side of the table.

“As soon as Detective Tripp gets here, we’ll begin.”

“Alright.” She said, glancing around. “Things haven’t changed much around here have they?” she asked him.

“No, not too much. Being on Bomb Squad, you probably didn’t see much of this area did you?”

“No. Not that I didn’t want to. I eventually wanted to go into forensics, but with the accident and all, I let all that go.”

“I’m sure you would have done well.”

At that time Detective Tripp entered the room, notebook in hand, and took a seat at the end of the table.

“Alright Ms. Timms, what we need you to do is write down everything that you can remember over the past few days. Sounds you might have heard, any people you might have seen, and the events of this morning.” Horatio told her.

“Okay.” She as she took the notebook and pen that Tripp handed to her. Kathleen started writing down what she could remember. Then suddenly stopped, looking at Horatio.

“Is there a problem?” Horatio asked looking concerned.

“I umm….I…would it be okay if I refer to my notebook I keep?” she asked, looking down towards the table.

“That perfectly fine.” He said in a soothing voice, knowing her memory was faulting her.

She pulled out a small legal pad out of her bag and opened it, looking over the pages finding what she wanted. She started writing again, referring to her notes every so often. When done, she gave the notebook to Horatio.

“I think that is everything.” She told him.

Horatio looked over the statement and then passed it to Frank who got up and left, heading back to his cubical.

“Have you found out anything about who might have done this to Tom?” she asked.

“No, not yet. I will be sending one of my investigators back out there though to follow up on a few things.”

“Sure. Not a problem. Please let me know if there is anything else you need. I want to help if I can.”

Horatio smiled at her, “Thank you for coming. I’m sure your statement will help us.”

“Well, hopefully. I just wish I could remember more, maybe paid closer attention.”

“You did just fine ma’am.”

She gave him a glare at being called “ma’am” once again. “Sorry, Kathleen, habit.”

She smiled, “Yeah, well, every time someone calls me that, I feel older than I am.”

He stood up and she followed suit, “Well, I apologize for that, didn’t mean to make you feel my age.”

“Lt. Caine” she shook her head, “Your not that old.”

“Yeah, well, I’m old enough.” He said opening the door for her once again and leading her to the front of the building. Horatio hadn’t noticed that they were being watched by one of his investigators. They continued chatting as lead her out to her car and saw her off. Putting on his sunglass, he headed back inside.

Speed was in the trace lab working on a sample when Horatio entered.

“How’s it going Speed?”

“Well, just finishing up actually on the sample from the Benson case. Seem’s there was taces of Glycerin, Butyrospermum Parkii, Cetyl Alcohol, Carbomer, basically Cocoa Butter lotion in the diluted liquid we found.”

“Cocoa Butter?”

“Yeah. Common skin care product. I’m having Alexx take samples from the body so I can see if there is any trace of it on him. Did his wife happen to mention if he had any allergies?”

“No…but I’ll have Yelina find out. Good work Speed. Also, I need you to go back to the Livingston scene. Take the portable ALS with you, see if you can find anything and get back to me.”

“Sure. Hey, was that the owner I saw you with in interrogation?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“Oh nothing, just that I think she has a thing for you.” Speed said with a smirk.

“I think you have been working too many hours.”

“Now H, you can’t tell me she wasn’t flirting with you, I saw how she was looking you.”

“Speed. She was not flirting.”

“Yeah, ok, well I know what I saw,” he said with a grin.

Horatio opened the door to the trace lab and turned back and looked at Speed, “Well, if she was, at least somebody is.” With that he left and Speed’s mouth dropped. ‘Okay, he did not just say that did he? And to me?’ he thought to himself. ‘I wonder if I’m that obvious…or not?’ With that he got back to work.
